Police triumph at Opportunity Now Awards. Once again the Champion award has gone to a woman in policing. Following the success of our own President previously, the 2008 winner is BAWP member Wendy Benson from MOD Police and Guarding Agency. In addition, a team from West Midlands Police led by and including several BAWP members has won the 'Diverse Women Award'. We congratulate all of them.
Job Opportunity. The Womens Holiday Centre is a not for profit, co-operatively run organisation, providing affordable holday accommodation for women and children. They are currently looking for a joint co-ordinator, and details of that post are available here. More information on the charity is available on their website or here.
Do you know what it was REALLY like in the 70s? A production company is working on a documentary for BBC FOUR called "The Real Life on Mars." Taking as our starting point the popular BBC drama, they want to ask what policing was really like in the 70s, and whether characters like the fictional DCI Gene Hunt really stalked the corridors acting like they were in The Sweeney.
They understand that women were just beginning to prove themselves in the 1970s and would love to talk to any officer from the period about what life was like, how they won the respect of all their colleagues, and how attitudes may have changed.
In the first instance please ring for an informal chat on the phone, and then if people are interested they would hopefully arrange to film an interview some time during May.
Please contact Simon Brown as below if you are interested. Direct line at the BBC is 0208 752 7877, mobile is 0795 716 0219, and email is simon.brown.05@bbc.co.uk.
Help overcome the Glass Cliff! Researchers at the University of Exeter are conducting cutting edge research into the experiences of women in the police service. All female members of the service (both officers and staff), but principally those at junior to intermediate levels are invited to complete a short (5-10 mins) online questionnaire that looks at the personality of different members of the service and asks about daily workplace experiences. We have been of mutual support to each other for a number of years now, so please take part if you can by following this link.
Reviews? The Commission is assigning high priority to equal pay and is updating and developing the EOC's Equal Pay Review Kit designed to help employers identify and tackle unequal pay.
Employer input is vital to ensure the Kit remains practical and user
friendly. TMS Equality & Diversity Consultants, who are updating the Kit on behalf of the EHRC, are looking for employers who would be willing to help. This will involve commenting on proposals and, possibly, attending one meeting. It should not be time consuming and will not require you to conduct a pay review or reveal any pay data.
If you think you can help, or would like more details, please contact
Lorraine Paddison, Director TMS, at lorraine@tms.uk.com or call 01305 213880 / 0771 429 1165
Guide to the workplace killing law. The Centre for Corporate Accountability (CCA) has published an 80-page guide to the new Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act which came into force on 6 April 2008. CCA says the guide is intended to help a range of interested groups and individuals - lawyers, advisers, bereaved families, trade unions, managers, employers or others - to understand the nature of the new offence, the type of organisations to which it applies, the circumstances that will lead to prosecution and areas in which the Act remains open to legal interpretation. CCA says its guide also helps explain how the new 'statutory' offence differs from the old 'common law' offence, and sets out the main arguments on each of the key issues in the 12 years since the Law Commission in England and Wales published its proposals for reform in 1996. A summary of the Act's key provisions is available on CCA's website.
