Bernard Divine
09/02/2010We are very sad to report the death of Bernard Divine, a long-time supporter and committee member of BAWP. Bernard retired as ACC in GMP, then took up a post with the RSPCA before finally retiring from regular work altogether. He played a major role in organising the Senior Women in Policing conferences in 2007 and 2008, and worked on the BAWP stand at many exhibitions - proving that BAWP membership is not exclusively female. He was married to Irene Divine, our first National Co-ordinator, and our thoughts are with her and their families.

The programme for this is now available here, but for information on costs and to book, please visit www.bawpevents.co.uk.

Fawcett Society Report
11/02/2010The Fawcett Society has launched a new report which may be of interest. Realising rights: increasing ethnic minority women’s access to justice examines the experiences of ethnic minority women throughout the criminal justice system – as offenders, victims and workers in the justice sector. It explores the intersectional discrimination on the grounds of race and sex that these women frequently face and the realities of a justice system which too often overlooks the needs of ethnic minority women in policy development and practice. The week-long event consists of memorial services, parades, a charity bike ride, a candle-lit vigil at the National Police Memorial (during which, fallen officers' names are added to the Wall of Honour), various family events for the bereaved and a Presidential address.
Every year a contingent of UK police officers attends the event. The UK involvement is high profile and includes; forming Guards of Honour (in full Number One Dress Uniform) meeting, greeting and escorting bereaved family members and friends at Washington Regan National Airport (in Dress Uniform), with US Honour Guard Teams. The week is organised by a charity called Concerns of Police Survivors and supported by the UK equivalent Care of Police Survivors.
